Google has announced their second annual Summer of Code, with 49 organizations mentoring student developers who want to work together on some cool open source projects.
Last year, over 400 students participated, and there was reportedly a huge amount of applications for the stipends and the opportunity to work with some great organizations.
This year, mentoring organizations include Apache, Creative Commons, Gaim, Jabber, PHP, Wikimedia, and Google itself. There are already some ideas to choose from, if you’re not the creative type.
Google will provide a stipend of 5000 USD per accepted student developer, of which 4500 USD goes to the student and 500 USD goes to the mentoring organization. Youll be paid 500 USD upon acceptance of your application to the program, 2000 USD mid-program (assuming you’ve made sufficient progress on your project), and 2000 USD at close of program (assuming you’ve completed your project.) The mentoring organization will receive its share upon completion of the project.
Applications open on May 1, and are due by May 8. Google will anounce the accepted proposals on May 23, and developers have until August 21 to complete their projects. And, most importantly, everyone gets a free t-shirt.
