Ibiblio described Lyceum as a multi-blog derivative of WordPress. The project described how it has enhanced WordPress for the Lyceum implementation:
We let WordPress do what it does well; we simply added nice things like smart administrative controls, an easy-to-use installer, enterprise-oriented database architecture, support for load-balancing, all the while focusing on flexibility, security and usability.
The main point of difference between Lyceum and WordPress’ multi-user version is in the database schema. Lyceum uses a fixed number of database tables for the whole system, where WordPress creates a set of tables for each blog in that system, according to the Lyceum FAQ.
Further, Lyceum’s code differs from WordPress’ code in that almost every SQL statement has been changed. Lyceum noted this was done to add the security needed in a multi-blog, multi-user environment.
Most existing themes and plugins for WordPress can be used with no or minimal modification to work in Lyceum. Only sysadmin users on Lyceum can upload or modify the plugins and themes available on an installation.
