Longmont, Colorado-based Cornice Inc. announced in January a new deal inked with Samsung for their 3 gigabyte Storage Element (SE) in the production of Samsung’s SGH-i300 embedded music smartphone.
The phone was announced at the CeBIT 2005 and hit European shelves in November 2005. The phone will cover audio, video, personal storage and traditional voice communications all in one device. Cornice has already provided for other Samsung phones including the SPH-V5400 with the 1.5-gigabyte Cornice SE and their SPH-V7900 video camera phone, 3.0-gigabyte Cornice SE.

Cornice’s storage is a natural fit for the mobile phone market, offering both the thinnest available storage solution, which is important for compact-sized mobile phones, and the extreme durability of Crash Guard(TM) technology, which is crucial to the consumer. The Cornice SE is able to withstand even the most extreme abuses of the mobile phone environment, such as accidental drops or excessive physical activities, without skipping, stopping or corrupting data.
Samsung’s SGH-i300 is capable of storing up to 1,000 music files, plus all your personal data using Samsung’s unique ‘Plug & Play Files-to-go’ feature, which also allows the phone to function as a storage device. Consumers can easily transfer files to and from their computers, as well as store files in any format on the phone through a USB 2.0 port.
The i300 is based on the Windows Mobile operating system, which enables users to download music from online music services and from OTA music services provided by mobile operators. It also features 3D sound, a 1.3 mega-pixel camera, video recording and messaging, and a Bluetooth stereo headset connection.
Samsung, which captured 13.8 percent of the world’s 2004 mobile phone market share according to In-Stat, is the leading innovator in the high-capacity mobile phone market. To date, Samsung is the only mobile phone provider to launch hard drive-based mobile phones into the market, which is projected by Gartner Dataquest to reach more than 28 million units worldwide in 2007.
