Ask Jeeves Leaning On Pisa

The Oakland-based search engine has been working on its Continental flair, by adding a research center in Italy to complement the debut of two new search sites in Europe.

Ask Jeeves will lean on Pisa, Italy to house its new research center. The company announced in a statement the center will focus on search technology research and development, while working with similar centers in California and New Jersey.

The company provided more details about the venture in its announcement:

Lead by Antonio Gulli, an expert in search engine technology and the creator of Italy’s first search engine, Arianna, the Ask Jeeves European research center will support all of Ask Jeeves search sites, including the flagship Ask.com. With broad expertise in machine learning, social networking, data mining, information retrieval and other theories and technologies, the team in Italy will contribute to all aspects of the Ask Jeeves search engine…

“Our European team has already made great strides in the continued innovation around Ask Jeeves search, and this new research center will fuel further development of useful and innovative search products for our users,” said Gulli.
Two new search sites, Ask Espana and Ask Deutschland, recently launched in Europe. Ask Jeeves plans to debut more in Europe in 2006.
