Dell announced the release of a comprehensive database featuring its quad-socket PowerEdge servers with new Intel Xeon dual-core technology and the new Microsoft SQL Server database. The package is intended to simplify migration to Microsoft SQL Server database and business-critical data center operations.
Jeff Clarke, senior vice president, Dell Product Group, compares the product to a fully supported ecosystem for customers.
“Customers can now more efficiently migrate their critical data with a complete database solution,” said Clarke. “Dell can provide a direct, single point of contact for customers’ complete enterprise database needs, from hardware and software to services and storage with great performance today and headroom for future growth.”
Dell says its PowerEdge server line enjoys the added performance and efficiency of dual-core technology through their PowerEdge 6800 and 6850 quad-socket servers that feature Intel Xeon processors, increasing compute-intensive workload performance by up to 51 percent. Early next year the company plans to release an 800 MHz front side bus to further boost performance.
Compute-intensive database applications such as 64-bit Microsoft SQL Server 2005 can achieve improved performance by using more memory in the servers and running multiple concurrent processes.
The PowerEdge 6800 and 6850 servers maintain a common system image and are backward compatible so customers can more easily manage and update all of their systems.
Making it easier to migrate to Microsoft’s SQL Server 2005 database, Dell says it is offering a comprehensive offering of servers, storage, systems management, service, and support. SQL Server 2005 is available directly through Dell PowerEdge servers or via existing licensing agreements.
The servers are prepackaged with Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (32/64-bit edition) and Red Hat Enterprise Linux (32/64-bit edition). Prices for the servers start at approximately $6,400.
