Sven Jaschan admitted to wrecking computers worldwide when he confessed to creating last year’s Sasser computer worm. The worm devastated hundreds of thousands of computers across the globe. In the process, he’s bought himself some real jail time for his computer terrorism.
The 19 year-old could face up to five years of prison time but was a minor at 17 when he committed the crime. He could face some lesser penalty including a fine or public service and possible confinement to a juvey hall. All he’ll probably get is a job.
The criminal prosecution won’t amount to much more than likely but the civil lawsuits could make him quite uncomfortable. The indictment listed 142 companies and one or all of those companies may sue. Some of these companies were quite large, like Delta Airlines.
The lad created a nasty little worm too. The electronic rodent is a self-executing bit of code based on the Netsky virus. It exploited a hole in a Window’s component known as the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (LSASS). The worm scanned for its prey and it found many.
Apparently, Jaschan initially meant well. He developed an initial version his virus to fight against the Bagle and Mydoom viruses. Unfortunately for many computer users, he lost sight of his benevolence and created Sasser instead. Sasser would crash computers so no one could even work on them. It was a real problem for many users including many government agencies in Germany. They’ve voiced their opinions on this trial as well.
Apparently, Jaschan may not be in the only one in trouble on this virus. Authorities are investigating several other accomplices including the informant who original tipped Microsoft off to the virus’ origins.
