We are all aware that spam is a curse that destroys our businesses.
Of course we waste our time filtering through the hundreds of items of trash we receive every day. And in many cases we end up deleting a message that we really wanted.
Not only that, but our customers frequently do not get our legitimate email because it gets dumped by the ISP in the spam folder, or blocked altogether.
For example, we run a genuine, subscription only newsletter. We send confirmations and log IPs of all subscribers.
It is a “Free mortgage investments newsletter”.
Unfortunately, the above words are all triggers that will put our legitimate newsletter in the trash.
Of course there also is a bunch of creeps using our Federally Trademarked domain name as part of the return address to send out stock tips.
We all suffer from similar abuse yet the Can Spam Law did nothing.
Surprise, surprise!
The Feds have got it all wrong. They are wasting their time trying to prosecute the senders of the spam. They are frequently overseas or using hijacked computers anyway.
What the need to do is to target certain abusive spam types, viagra, cialis, penis enlargement etc. and then sue the companies that BENEFIT from the spam.
Just about all these companies use credit cards for their sales, so what needs to be done is to freeze the credit card accounts (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, PayPal, Amex) for anyone who is using spam to sell their goods. And they are all USA based.
This should be done instantly the spam goes out and then the companies would have the opportunity to prove that they did in fact comply with the law.
Let’s be fair here. I’m not suggesting that someone who sends the occasional unsolicited email to a handful of people should have their bank accounts seized.
Only the most egregious companies should suffer this fate.
Cut off the reward for sending out spam and it will mostly go away.
