Today is the official launch day for the highly anticipated Sony Playstation Portable gaming system, and it has been ushered in with crowds lining up outside of stores to get their hands on it.
A large number of stores either had midnight sales or opened early in order to satisfy the demand. Sony celebrated the launch by having a midnight sale in New York City, which was hosted by Carson Daly of MTV fame with SCEA president Kaz Hirai in attendance. Hirai shared his thoughts on the event:
“Consumer demand for PSP is higher than any product in recent history. The fact that select retailers are responding to this launch by opening their doors early to allow enthusiasts to get one as soon as they hit shelves, reinforces the true appeal of PSP as an object of desire.”
To satisfy consumer demand, Sony indicated 1 million PSPs would be available in the United States when it launched today. Because of this, Sony had to delay the European PSP launch. Dennis Syracuse, senior vice president, Sony Style Retail, said, “Like most consumers, we can’t wait for the launch of PSP. The PSP reflects all that Sony Style Retail has to offer with games, movies, music and photos at your fingertips. PSP represents true entertainment convergence in one device.”
To assist in satisfying the US consumer, Sony made sure to have a number of games available for North American PSP owners to use. The current PSP game catalog stands at 24.
Also included with the first million PSPs sold is a copy of the Spider Man 2 movie in UMD format, Sony’s proprietary storage medium for PSP software and movies.
