Talking PSP

Big news for gamers … Sony said Thursday it will release the PlayStation Portable in North America on March 24.

Sony Computer Entertainment will manufacture one million units for sale in the North American market by the close of its fiscal year ending March 31. This figure is part of the company’s total three-million-unit worldwide PSP system shipment estimate within the same time period.

PSP released in Japan on December 12, 2004 and is already a hit, with more than 800,000 units shipped, including a 200,000-unit allocation that sold out on day one.

That is the official Sony announcement. But what do the gamers have to say:

So1o:
“After the astounding success of the gamestation, sony is coming out with their portable version of the Playstation. The gamer which is priced at $249 is all set to hit the market on March 24.

Watch out Gameboy!!”

Generation Star Wars:

“The North American release of Sony’s PSP will indeed be a blockbuster package. The PSP Value Pack contains an unprecedented added-value package of accessories and entertainment content, including 32MB Memory Stick Duo, headphones with remote control, battery pack, AC adaptor, soft case and cleaning cloth, movie/music/game video sampler UMD disc including multiple non-interactive game demos, and for the first one million PSP Value Packs shipped, a special UMD video release of the feature film Spider-Man 2 from Sony Pictures Entertainment.

In light of shipping to Japanese and North American markets sans chip capacity. The highly anticipated European PSP launch remains unclear according to Bloomberg. Although I’m eager to get my hands on a PlayStation Portable, the ‘quality control’ problems – from stuck buttons to dead pixels – are an area of concern for a high value product and it’s preferable to see these resolved in a timely fashion.”

eGGO’s World:
“Two years ago (I think), Sony suddenly announced that it was developing a competitor to the hugely popular Nintendo GameBoy Advance in order to try and steal a piece of the action from them. Several months went by and then rumors began, cultivating into Sony’s official press release on their new project, the PSP (or PlayStation Portable). Needless to say, it was an intriguing device, made all the more impressive by the fact that it had the ability to not only function as a portable game machine, but also a portable music and video one too.”

Load””
“Although I’m really not a fan of the PS2’s looks (the PSTwo is a big improvement however), Sony’s PlayStation Portable is a seriously attractive piece of kit. The value pack (PSP, soft cover, crap headphones, remote, 32MB MemoryStick Duo and SpiderMan 2 on UMD for the first million sales) is going to be $250 when it comes out in the US. I haven’t read any announcements about the European pricing yet, but it’s likely that they’ll put it at a point above the Nintendo DS, so as to distinguish it as an upmarket, older-demographic product. Still, us in the UK will most likely be ripped off again!”

As we told you a couple of days ago, the PSP is confirmed to be launched in US and Canada on March 24 for $249 USD and $299.99 CND. Sony also has announced the preliminary list of launch titles.

STUFFSblog:
” Wow Baby!
Hmmm…

That PSP is pretty sweet! I just played a little Ridge Racer at a kiosk at Toy’s R’ Us! Man it’s so awsome! Nintendo is gonna get killed man! Just Kiddin’.

So the PSP… “WOW” thing. Tyler is all like, “Rarrr!!! Look at me I’m Tyler! Rarrr!!! Playstation Blah-Blah-Blah!!! Nintendo rulz!!!!” Just Kiddin’ again. My WOW reaction is pretty much the same as T’s.

It’s sortive like WOW – price wise, it ain’t too bad but still it’s a 100 bucks more than the DS and for a portable it’s questionable.

Again I go, WOW – I get a piece of shit hardware that’s gonna break down in a few months, built with poor design issues and you get a bunch of extra crap you realy don’t give a shit about.

I like the idea, it’s a portable entertainment system. Movies, mp3s and games. Yet the price and design is still in question. I’ll wait until Sony does their design revision and fix that damn button and anything else in it that breaks down.

One thing people fail to recognize is that you’re not just purchasing a portable game system, it’s also a controller. You see with a console, when your controller breaks down you goto the store and pick up an extra controller for 20-30 bucks. With your PSP, when your controller wears down or starts fuckin’ up… Well guess what? You got an extra $300 bucks to shell out? The same goes with the screen and the tiny disc drive in the unit. If these parts breakdown, that’s it.

Again for a portable it’s pricy. Oh I’ll get one, maybe in a year from now when the price drops and the design issues are resolved. In the meantime I’ll keep enjoying my Nintendo DS.”
