Bombardier Lands $45 million Tram Deal

Bombardier Transportation received an order from two transportation companies for 16 low-floor trams worth about $45 million.

The contract is an option to a former order placed by 4 transportation operators in the Rhein-Neckar region in 1999, for a total of 36 trams. Ten of the new trams will be in service for MVV OEG AG and six of the vehicles will be operated by MVV Verkehr AG. Delivery of the vehicles is scheduled to take place between September 2006 and May 2007. The contract includes another option for further nine vehicles.

“The fact that Mannheim has again chosen Bombardier’s proven low-floor trams is a sign of great and enduring confidence”, says Walter Grawenhoff, President Light Rail Vehicles, Bombardier Transportation. “We do not only supply the residents of Mannheim with a customized product, we also provide a vehicle that will further increase the attractiveness of public transport with its smart and modern appearance.”

The 30 and 42 metre-long trams will be manufactured at Bombardier’s Bautzen plant in Germany, the site in Mannheim will supply the electrical equipment and Bombardier’s Siegen facility will produce the bogies.

The trams are equipped with a high-capacity air conditioning system and a clear passenger information system. In addition, an especially high running stability ensures a comfortable tram-journey. With an entrance height of 350 millimetres as well as folding ramps and sufficient space for wheelchairs, the low-floor vehicles are well equipped to cater for disabled passengers. The friendly design with fresh colours and large windows gives the tram an especially attractive and transparent appearance.
