Network World Looks at Some of Most Talked-about Technologies.

Network World published its annual Buzz Issue providing an in-depth look at some of the most talked-about new and emerging technologies and trends in the networked world.

Topping the list is de-perimeterization, a new concept of concern to Network IT Executives. As companies open their networks to customers, suppliers and business partners, Network IT Executives are faced with the reality that security efforts concerning the traditional perimeter may not be enough. Advocates of de-perimeterization suggest a new way of viewing enterprise security: from inside the firewall. This Buzz Issue covers how to secure networks and their applications from end-to-end.

The Buzz Issue also examines the Infranet Initiative, a cross-industry effort to create a public IP infrastructure that provides an alternative to the Internet for business-class services. With the backing of more than two-dozen companies, including British Telecom (BT), Hewlett Packard and Juniper Networks, a preliminary infranet infrastructure may be in place within six to 12 months. Network World explores the infranet concept and why its supporters believe Network IT Executives are ready for a public IP network that provides improved reach, performance and security.

Desktop Linux, now a focus of companies such as Sun Microsystems and Novell is explored in this Buzz Issue, which also takes a look at available Linux applications and what it will take to break the reliance on traditional Microsoft Windows desktops.

Other editorial highlights in Network World’s 2004 Buzz Issue include:

— Next-generation mobile data services;

— Managed voice over IP services (managed VoIP) offered by local, long distance and specialty carriers;

— Multi-core processors and 64-bit extensions for x86-based PC servers;

— Business service management software for aligning IT functions with corporate goals;

— Storage grids, a new approach to data management.

“By analyzing the latest industry buzz, we provide Network IT Executives the information they need for determining what role – if any – the latest talked-about technologies might play in their enterprises,” says Beth Schultz, editor, Signature Series.

The Buzz Issue is one of six Signature Series published bimonthly by Network World. These award-winning issues explore the most important challenges facing Network IT Executives today.
