Incorrectly claiming to be the first to offer this service, Lycos has announced that it will be offering 1 Gigabyte worth of storage to members of its email service. The service will cost around 3.49 Pounds a month, or $6.31 USD.
Previously, Lycos offered paid members storage sizes ranging from 10MB to 100MB. The 10MB accounts were and still are free.
“We will be interested to see when our competitors can offer the service that we already provide with a sustainable business model to underpin it. But size is not all that matters,” said Alex Kovach, Lycos’s European vice president.
This newest storage option comes on the heels of the Gmail announcement on April 1. Since then, Yahoo has increased their storage amounts for paid and non-paid members, as have other mail services.
While these company’s alter the email services they offer, Gmail still has the advantage because its service is free. Lycos and Yahoo charge for their larger storage sizes.
Furthermore, Lycos is making an incorrect boast claiming to be the first to offer a fully operational email service that features the exalted 1 gig worth of storage. Although Gmail is still in beta testing and Yahoo has only announced its intentions (not enacting them, as of yet), Lycos is not the first company to offer a working, increased storage feature.
As reported by Murdok, Spymac, a Mac-based hosting company, Walla Communications, an Israeli portal, and 2 Russian Internet portals, Yandex.ru and Mail.ru, already offer working email services that include the storage capacity in question. Even more, all of the websites mentioned above offer their services for no charge.
This means that Lycos is not the first portal to offer the holy grail for email storage. For accuracy’s sake, it was Spymac who first offered a non-beta version of its email service with the gig storage capacity.
