Open Source Search Engine Seeking Ideas

OpenIndex, a website looking to develop an open source search engine index, offers a communal place for ideas and pointers on index development.

OpenIndex states that they have a bias – it is, “developing an index by the people, for the people, of the people, as it were.” As of now, the site offers search engine headlines, a detailed description of indexes and their goals around them. It also offers a forum where developers can exchange ideas on open source searchable index development.

OpenIndex’s goal is to have as large of an index as possible. The kicker is, they don’t have the storage capacity that a Google or a Yahoo has. In order to address this OpenIndex has this idea:

“Although we wouldn’t likely have large computers available, we could have many small ones, contributed by interested volunteers, and distributed across the community – even across the globe. Perhaps it’s the only way to have a publicly owned and operated index. It certainly seems appropriate.”

Essentially, OpenIndex foresees a community of computers based worldwide, with each computer having a particular index stored on it. These computers would contribute their index, forming a community of indexes that would be searchable using OpenIndex.
