Hello, I booted up my PC this morning and received an interesting little greeting that reads as follows: “Windows logon UI has encountered a problem and needed to close”. It gave me the option to send a report to MS, which I selected to do so.
The error continues to return immediately regardless of whatever selection I make. Other than having to move the annoying message box, the error doesn’t appear to have hindered my ability to use my PC….. but how do I fix the problem? What is a Logon UI?
I searched google yesterday using the entire error code above and your site was at the top of the list. But I wasn’t able to find anything related to the issue. I have also been to Microsoft.com and haven’t been able to find anything related to that error message either. Their customer service is pathetic. I know that you probably get PC questions all the time, but I could really use some help, even if it’s just a link to instructions on how I can solve this issue myself. I wouldn’t be in such a hurry except that this has occurred suddenly on my business laptop and I use this to show project information to my clients….. a bit embarrassing when the window pops up and I gotta move it out of the way to do business. =(

What is a dll file and is there a default folder where DLL files should be stored? Where should they be? All of my dll files are in a music program called music match jukebox!! I have no idea how they all go there, but I seriously doubt that’s where they’re supposed to be. I want to delete music match because I don’t use it, but I’m afraid I’ll wipe out all of my dll files! I just bought a digital camera and when I downloaded the program that came with it, the dll files went immediately to music match jukebox! Thanks in advance for your help!
A great explanation of DLL files is offered here: http://www.easydesksoftware.com/dll.htm Unfortunately, there are no rules on how to write software. Therefore, there are no rules as to where to place DLL files. Software developers can (and quite frequently DO) place them where-ever they want on your hard drive. It would be virtually impossible to differentiate unneeded DLL files from needed ones. Erase the wrong one and your system won’t boot any more. The only way to be sure you only have the DLLs you need is to format your hard drive, reinstall Windows and re-install your applications. If you are running Windows 95, 98 or Millennium, PC Magazine recommends you reformat and reinstall your operating system once a year, partially for this reason. Thanks for writing! Carey
I installed Ad Aware last Friday, didn’t notice and consequently didn’t ask for the discount, code “.RA26BA20”. Can I get credit or something for that? A friend wants either Ad Aware or Spybot. His question: Does either of these programs react unfavorably with Anti-virus programs already installed? I am interested in your answer also. I have Norton anti-virus installed. Of interest, I have located and removed almost 250 “parasites” since installing Ad Aware. They are apparently returning on a regular basis, however, so it would appear that this deletion of Spyware will be a never-ending task. D.
AdAware and Spybot get along with all other software except software that contains spyware. You must run the spyware checking on a regular basis – it’s not something you run once and forget about. Just like eating right – you can’t have a healthy meal one day and expect to reap the benefits for a life time. With regards to a discount code, you should contact customer service of the product. My pc running XP recently crashed and refused all efforts to reboot. I could not find the factory supplied disks to reboot. I installed a new disk drive as the master drive and loaded a copy of windows 2000 onto the new disk drive and configured the various drivers. I could not access the office files and so reinstalled office XP on the new drive. Is there any way to acces the contacts and e-mails that I had in outlook prior to the crash. I have managed to locate all the information that had been archived but none of the recent e-mails nor contacts. I would be most grateful for any suggestions. Best regards E. L.
If you were using Outlook, and not Outlook Express, locate the file with the extension .PST. Use the import function on Outlook to Import the PST file and everything from your contacts to your email will be restore. Carey
