OpenAI and the American Journalism Project Join Forces to Reinvent Local News with AI

The American Journalism Project (AJP), a philanthropic organization dedicated to revitalizing local news, has joined forces with OpenAI, a leading AI research and deployment company. This collaboration aims to use AI effectively in cultivating a dynamic local news landscape. OpenAI has committed $5 million to support AJP’s initiatives and an additional $5 million in API credits to assist AJP grantees in adopting cutting-edge AI solutions.

Exploring AI’s Potential in Journalism

This collaboration aims to foster conversations between the local news industry and OpenAI. The goal is to develop tools that can assist local news organizations. “During these early stages of generative AI, we have a unique opportunity to involve local news organizations and their communities in shaping its impact. Through this partnership, our aim is to explore ways in which AI can enhance journalism, rather than jeopardize it,” stated Sarabeth Berman, CEO of the American Journalism Project.

AI has the potential to unlock significant opportunities for journalism organizations. It can enable deeper data analysis, improve user experience, and introduce innovative information delivery formats. However, it is crucial to address the challenges that AI presents, such as misinformation, bias, privacy concerns, and copyright issues.

Building an AI-Ready Local News Ecosystem

AJP aims to establish a strong support system, empowering local news organizations with AI to enhance their capabilities. This partnership will aid AJP in revitalizing local news and promoting reliable information networks to counter misinformation. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, enthusiastically embraced the collaboration, highlighting its alignment with OpenAI’s mission to make AI accessible for all and improve productivity.

How AJP Plans to Leverage AI

The AJP, in collaboration with local news organizations, aims to experiment with AI applications using funds from OpenAI in multiple ways. Firstly, an AI studio will be established to evaluate AI applications in the local news sector, providing coaching and promoting collaboration with external partners such as OpenAI. This initiative will focus on preventing misinformation and supporting high-quality journalism actively.

Secondly, AJP plans to offer direct grants to around ten of its organizations to explore the potential of AI. These grantees will conduct pilot projects using various AI applications, generating valuable insights for the entire local news industry.

Additionally, OpenAI’s contribution includes $5 million in API credits. AJP and its portfolio organizations can utilize these credits to develop and utilize tools that harness the power of AI.

This partnership is a crucial step in addressing the decline of local news in the internet era and ensuring the sustainability of robust journalism, which plays a vital role in fostering a healthy democracy.
