Xignite, which provides global financial market data, is working with Wolfram Alpha, so that Wolfram Alpha users can get such data when performing a query.
You recall Wolfram Alpha right? It was the subject of a lot of buzz earlier this year, as its aim was to provide a new way of searching as a “knowledge engine,” which provides users with definitive answers rather than pages of results. It delivers these answers with “a mixture of many clever algorithms and heuristics, lots of linguistic discovery and linguistic curation, and what probably amount to some serious theoretical breakthroughs,” as creator Stephen Wolfram put it.
“With Wolfram|Alpha, we’ve created the best possible financial portal where all analyses and visualizations are calculated the moment they are requested using real-time market data and financial information,” Peter Overmann, director at Wolfram Research tells murdok.
“Providing the level of in-depth, real-time financial information and analysis that we’re able to offer with Wolfram|Alpha would have been prohibitively expensive and time-consuming without Xignite’s web services,” he says.
“With the volatile world economy, the demand for real-time financial information has exploded in the past year,” he says. “Now more than ever, consumers are constantly reassessing how they get their information on the web to ensure they have the latest and most intuitive answers and insights.”
Wolfram Alpha gets the following info from Xignite:
– real-time and historical stock prices
– market indices
– interest rates
-currency exchange rates
– commodity prices
– various economic statistics
Using Xignite Web services, Wolfram|Alpha provides financial info for queries as simple as something like “biggest automotive company,” or something more complex like “what is General Electric’s dividend per share in euros.” Results come based on real-time rates and location awareness according to Xignite.
