Facebook Attracting More of the Older Crowd

Share

Facebook has received a lot of criticism in recent weeks as it rolled out some pretty big changes in design and functionality. Such changes and criticism did not do much to slow down growth of the site however.

Inside Facebook is reporting some interesting numbers about Facebook’s growth in the US. It is growing in popularity especially with older users. The number of people on Facebook over the age of 35 has nearly doubled in the past two months. The fastest growing demographic is women over 55. There are about 1.5 million in this demographic.

In the last six months, the largest amount of growth has come in the demographic of users 35-44 years of age. Justin Smith at Inside Facebook shares the following graphs:

So I guess the real question (and not a new one by any means) is – will the youngsters continue to look for a different social network to hang out on as Facebook continues to be permeated by their parents and marketers? Maybe by the time they realize that the older-folk will follow them wherever they go, they’ll already be part of the next demographic. Meanwhile, Facebook continues to narrow the gap between itself and Google in terms of unique visitors.
