Blockbuster Launches New Set-Top Box

Blockbuster is introducing its own set-top box, which will bring movies directly to a user’s TV and provide access to on demand content.

The MediaPoint digital media player by broadband device maker 2Wire is available to Blockbuster customers for $99 and includes 25 movies. After the initial 25 rentals, movies are available for $1.99 each to $3.99.

Unlike subscription-based services, such as Netflix, Blockbuster on demand will allow customers to have access to more recent releases and will be available to those who do not subscribe to its DVD mail service, Blockbuster Online.

“The MediaPoint digital player, featuring BLOCKBUSTER ONDEMAND, is entertainment made easy. We are bringing Blockbuster, and the thousands of movies in our digital library, straight to customers’ televisions,” said Jim Keyes, Blockbuster Chairman and CEO.

“The player is simple to use, delivers DVD quality video, and there’s no monthly subscription commitment.”

The MediaPoint player works with any broadband connection and once movies are downloaded, customers have 30 days to watch the film and must finish watching it within 24 hours of pushing the “play” button.

Blockbuster is hoping that its focus on new releases will attract more customers and help it to compete with rival Netflix.

“To be successful, a broadband video offering needs to deliver movies that people want to see, in the quality they expect, with minimal setup requirements,” said Pat Romano, chief executive officer of 2Wire. “BLOCKBUSTER ONDEMAND and the MediaPoint digital media player give movie fans what they want.”
