LG Phones To Deliver Yahoo Services

LG Electronics has 64,082 employees, a chairman and CEO who goes by the name “S.S. Kim,” and almost 50 years of corporate history. It also has a new “strategic mobile partnership” with Yahoo to distribute the company’s services on some phones.

Upon visiting the LG website, I was surprised to see how detailed parts of the “About Us” section are. From an in-depth explanation of the brand’s symbol to a discussion of “values,” “promise,” “benefits,” and “personality,” just about anything you could want to see is there. It seems a little strange, then, that the details of the LG-Yahoo deal weren’t entirely spelled out.

According to an official statement, LG will “pre-load Yahoo! services, including Yahoo! Go for Mobile 2.0, Yahoo! Mail and Yahoo Messenger on many of its mobile phones.” How many phones, where, and when? “[O]n tens of millions of LG mobile phones in more than 70 countries around the world . . . . [b]eginning later in 2007 . . .”

And that’s about all there was in the way of details. Neither LG nor Yahoo gave further notice as to exactly how many phones will be affected, which markets they’ll enter, or precisely when they’ll do so.

Still, Paul Bae, vice president of LG’s Product Planning Team, said that the Yahoo-ized phones will “offer extra value to consumers with enhanced mobile Internet experiences. Our leading mobile devices, combined with innovative Yahoo! services, will provide consumers with easy access to their favorite Internet services and make it easy for them to stay connected to what’s important to them on the go.”
