Hail To The Chief, President Gates

An idea floated by Dilbert cartoonist and frequent blogger Scott Adams that Bill Gates belongs in the White House in 2008 has been matched by a website dedicated to the idea, and arguments pro and con about the possibility of Microsoft’s founder and the world’s richest man occupying the Oval Office.

Gates in ’08? Why not, asked Adams in a recent post at the Dilbert blog. Why not, asked the people behind a website supporting the idea.

He’s acquainted with world leaders. The efforts of his Gates Foundation help people around the globe. He has to be smarter than a lot of the politicians who will throw their hats into the ring.

As far as special interests go, no one can buy off a guy who has special computers at the IRS dedicated just to calculating his taxes. Gates would probably just have his Presidential salary converted to medicine and sent to treat children in Third World countries as part of his foreign relations policy.

Plenty of people will have reasons why not, and they will involve those whom Microsoft has steamrollered with its business practices. From an objective viewpoint, Gates has been a person who knows how to get things done and has fought for his company’s success. Instead of software startups, it would be anti-American regimes getting “the treatment.”

Of course, interest in the job would have to be expressed by the heir apparent to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. If Gates has an opinion on running or not running for the Presidency, it isn’t known yet.

Should he decide not to run, I understand Christopher Walken is being touted for the job. Unfortunately the actor does not have political aspirations.
