AOL Stumping For Election Blogging

The election season is upon us, and although the next US President won’t be elected for two more years, there are plenty of Congressional races taking place that could change the balance of power in the House and possibly the Senate.

Until then, plenty of speculation and guesswork will abound, and viewers will pour into sites like Daily Kos or Michelle Malkin’s blog to catch up on the latest chatter about issues and political races. AOL has announced it will offer something for political fans as well.

The AOL Elections Blog, also called The Stump, will grab political news tidbits from sites around the Internet. They also have a feature where site visitors can ask questions of political insiders.

People like Sam Donaldson, George Stephanopolous, Brian Roberts and Jake Tapper, all from ABC News’ political insider, will be featured each Monday morning. Visitors to The Stump can submit questions for those insiders, with their responses delivered via video each Friday.

This week, visitors can leave questions in the Comments section for Donaldson. So far questions range from the benign (“Do you think Democrats will win the seats they need to take the Senate?”) to the belligerent (“WHY DO WE HEAR ZERO ABOUT SANDY BERGER,JEFFERSON, AND REID?”).

The Stump also carries election-oriented headlines on the blog, and link to stories that have been placed in the ABC News political radar. Site visitors can find their elected representatives and state-related election news through The Stump and see candidates in Congressional and State races.

Various newsmakers have a featured spot in The Stump’s sidebar. One example story centers on Jay Leno, and his hosting of California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger on a recent episode of The Tonight Show.

House Representative Xavier Becerra from California has complained to federal officials about Schwarzenegger’s appearance violates the Federal Communications Act.

Maybe he can ask Donaldson if Arnie’s appearance looks like favoritism on Leno part.
