Yahoo Time Capsule Banned From Mexico

Instead of beaming its digitized time capsule into space from the Pyramid of the Sun, Yahoo will have to settle for burying it in the ground like everyone else does.

The plan to send the capsule in digital form into outer space with a laser from the 216-foot tall Pyramid of the Sun in Teotihuacan, Mexico would have been the highlight of Yahoo’s ongoing marketing blitz. Alas, it was not meant to be.

Mexican authorities have denied Yahoo permission to conduct its laser beaming from the Pyramid of the Sun, fearing damage to the ancient historical site. Reuters reported on the reversal, which came a day after Yahoo announced it would project information collected for its time capsule onto the pyramid before sending it into space:

“We did have the permit, but Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History told us Monday night that it could not be done,” Manuel Mazzanti, head of marketing at Yahoo Mexico, said Wednesday.

Mazzanti said the company was looking for another launch site for the event but had ruled out Mexico.
We are as disappointed as everyone else, so we would like to offer some alternative suggestions for Yahoo’s time capsule/extraterrestrial contact laser ceremony.

If Yahoo really has its heart set on a pyramid, they could always hit the Luxor in Vegas. Since the Luxor beams a spotlight off the top of the pyramid anyway, it should be easy to set up the Time Capsule laser show. Maybe Terry Semel could hit the blackjack tables and try and raise some more money to buy Facebook while he’s there.

They could use the Washington Monument. It is taller than the Pyramid of the Sun, and people could watch it from the Mall after spending the day visiting the Smithsonian.

Yahoo could make it a shorter trip and go down to L.A. There they could aim the laser at the Hollywood sign. The Yahoos working in Santa Monica could get the day off so they could watch the event via webcam feeds.

How about Mount Rushmore instead? They could split the laser so the display would appear on Teddy Roosevelt’s mustache and Abraham Lincoln’s beard.

Should all else fail, there is always Cadillac Ranch.
