Porn on Google News?

Scrolling down the entertainment section of Google News, there’s something about Martin Scorsese, a remake of Office Space, and a thumbnail of a topless bleach blonde silicone starlet linking to a gambling site… wait, something’s not right.

Rusty Brick at Search Engine Roundtable went ahead and elevated the Adult Content Threat Level from “Frontal” to “Porn.” It’s unclear whether topless equals porn, but maybe he knows it when I don’t see it. Texas probably sees it though. But the screenshot is classic.

Rusty followed up on a reader report that there was pornographic material on the Google News homepage and got the screenshot. Unfortunately, this reporter could find no trace of the thumbnail displayed to the right of the Entertainment section, and Rusty responsibly placed a black bar over the offending areas.

Maybe I should turn off my Safe Search function. The fact it’s not on my screen tells me Google got to this pretty quickly. Perhaps it was an algorithmic glitch, but it does make you wonder how many and how often glitches like this occur, and how explicit they might be. The fact that the link is to a gambling site is perhaps more interesting.

An EOG.com (Eye on Gambling) link appears beneath the thumbnail, which has nothing to do with the thumbnail. Not only is online gambling currently illegal in the United States, but the DOJ cracking down even on advertising agencies who run gambling site campaigns.
