Larry LaCost’s welcoming smile was the first to greet us when we arrived at the Podcast and Portable Media Expo. A year’s worth of podcasting is enough to make Larry a veteran in the industry, though he’s been in the news business for a lot longer than that.
At the conference session, “Podcasting for Print Publications,” Larry joined a panel that included Marcus Chan of the San Francisco Chronicle, and Curt Brandao of the Honolulu Star Bulletin.
During the session, LaCost expanded on why podcasting was a great way to complement print content. If one interviews the mayor, for example, a writer may get half a page to tell the story, or even less, if the editor cuts to make room for advertising. Podcasting gives a way to tell the whole the story.
But also, as was pointed out numerous times during the conference, people just don’t always have time to read articles, in the paper or on the Web. Podcasts can be listened to anywhere: in the car, while exercising, while working, you name it.
The Daily Journal has a very definite audience, as should any media intended for the Web, and takes local advertising for its podcasts. For exposure, LaCost recommends the big names like iTunes and Yahoo, but also directs those interested in getting riding the meme to get listed in the directory Podcast411.
He reiterated that content was still king, and if a paper or text publication commits to publishing a podcast, then they should commit to publishing it everywhere – on the website, on promotional material, in the paper, on the blogs.
Then, what may be quite useful for those interested in beginning a podcast of their own, a list of equipment and software was provided by the panel.
